FATHER OF INDIAN LIBRARY SCIENCE


Sirkazhi Ramamrita Ranganathan is the renowned as the father of library science in India because he was formulated the five laws of library science and contributed value information to the library science. We are very happy to say as he was born in Sirkazhi on 12/08/1892. He had lot knowledge in mathematics and library science. He had started as professional as a mathematician. He was appointed as librarian in University of Madras. He was published famous books on "Five Laws of library Science". This book was given the priority for "books are meant for use", "user is the primary factor" and "his time must be saved". He was published in 1933 and framed the colon classification system. This book was given the priority for the formula to classify the books. He was introduced three card system. This work was given the priority for the receipt of the periodicals. He was also framed the formula for budget allocation in Academic library (University and College) and Public library. In India has published the one rupee stamp on the remember of Dr. S.R.Ranganathan. He got the one of best award from the Government of India as "Padmashri". Madras Public Libraries act was enacted based on research and activity by S. R. Ranganathan and the Madras Library Association. His life was end on 27th September 1972.


        Every libraries are celebrated the National Librarian's Day on 12th August. This day is celebrated in the remembrance of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan for valuable contribution in the library field.
